In official Iranian sources, the Quds Force is the extraterritorial branch of the IRGC, tasked with supporting the "Axis of Resistance" and regional resistance movements.
General Qassem Soleimani was its best-known commander, whom the Iranian narrative calls "the commander of hearts" and a key figure in the fight against ISIS; he was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020, and General Esmail Qaani succeeded him.
