In the official Iranian account, Operation Mersad took place in late July 1988 at the end of the Sacred Defense, when the Mojahedin-e Khalq group, backed by Iraq, attacked western Iran and Iranian forces swiftly repelled it. Iranian sources regard the operation as a symbol of defeating the enemy's final offensive.
