Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)

Wikimedia category

In official Iranian sources, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is a military institution founded in May 1979 by order of Imam Khomeini to safeguard the achievements of the Islamic Revolution and defend the country.

The official narrative emphasizes the IRGC's central role in the Sacred Defense and, afterward, the development of missile, drone and naval capabilities. It comprises Ground, Aerospace, Navy and the Basij Resistance forces, and its extraterritorial branch is the Quds Force.

Iranian sources present the IRGC as a pillar of the country's deterrence and a supporter of the "Axis of Resistance." Assessments of the organization differ greatly across states and sources; this entry reflects the official Iranian narrative.
